How This Course Came To Be
Recently, CyberWise worked with the non-profit iKeepSafe, the California Schools Library Association (CSLA), and Verizon Wireless on a ground-breaking digital literacy program for families. From research conducted by iKeepSafe – contributed by information security experts, public health professionals, law enforcement, digital literacy experts, media psychologists and — six “must-know” concepts about digital life emerged. Summarized best as a simple acronym, B.E. a P.R.O.™, they are: Balance, Ethical Use, Privacy, Relationships, Reputation, and Online Security.*
This research has been expanded upon by CyberWise so that families everywhere can benefit from this work. Each topic is presented simply, as a mini-lesson that you can access anytime, anywhere, and finish in just a couple of hours.
Whoo Whoo Are We?
CyberWise Certified was created by the team of media psychology and literacy experts who founded CyberWise, the go-to destination for grownups seeking to embrace digital media fearlessly. Five years of pioneering research, development and thought-leader input has gone into this comprehensive online learning program that will improve your digital communication skills, personally and professionally.
In 2008, co-founders Diana Graber and Cynthia Lieberman became inspired to launch CyberWise while pursuing M.A. degrees in Media Psychology and Social Change, a pioneering field that focuses on how human behavior is affected by the media and how to use it to influence social change.
Soon after receiving their degrees, Diana and Cynthia began attending conferences where scholars and thought leaders were sharing cutting-edge research about the benefits of the positive use of digital media in class, at work, and at home. The team felt compelled to get this important information to the people who needed it most — educators, parents, and other adults. So equipped with their state-of-the-art education and 40+ combined years of entertainment and media experience, they began dedicating their energy towards empowering grownups to embrace new digital media fearlessly.
In 2011, CyberWise was recognized as finalists of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation, HASTAC, and Mozilla Digital Media and Learning (DML) Competition designed to find and fund the most innovative use of new media in support of connected learning. They have also produced and marketed projects for clients that include iKeepsafe, Verizon Wireless and Google.
Since then, CyberWise has grown into its latest phase, offering this state-of-the-art CyberWise Certified learning program so that anyone can learn, practice, and apply new digital skills… anytime, anywhere. These lessons are so easy and accessible that anyone — including you — can be CyberWise Certified in no time!
